LOAVES AND FISH
Offering Basket

I have in my hand an empty offering basket.

My life’s basket has gone from empty to full. Let me tell you a brief story. About six years ago I was going through a very tough time in my life. My wife of almost sixty years was slowly dying of COPD. On top of that she fell and broke her hip and had to have a hip replacement.

We were not church goers. In fact we had not been to a Sunday service in over forty years. Then my daughter, Dee Ullrich, a member of St. Francis Church, started to have our wonderful Evangelistic Ministers begin visiting my ailing wife and bringing her communion. These visits were a Godsend to me and my ailing wife. After a home visit from Mother Chris, we became members of St. Francis Church. We renewed our vows right here on our 60th wedding anniversary in February 2013, but unfortunately she died a few months later on Mother’s Day weekend.

My love of this church has grown and as most of you know, I am now happily married to Linda Bailey. I serve on the Vestry, the Finance Committee, and cook for Welcome Table. I now try to give back to our Lord for these many blessings that I have received by tithing to our church which, through the grace of God, I can afford to do.

Giving is done in many ways here at St. Francis Church. We give our time, talent, and treasure to support our church and its many and various ministries. We do this because of our love of God and our desire that we may help others to grow and know Him. How can you help to fill this basket?

What to Watch for in Church This Sunday

This week, we’ll read the Psalm antiphonally by whole verse at both services. Antiphonal is from the Greek, meaning “voice against voice,” and in practice is an alternation between groups of people. Instructions for antiphonal reading of the Psalms will always tell you who the groups are. This week the groups will be the two different sides of the church. The left side (the pulpit side) will read the first verse and the right side (the organ side) will read the next verse, continuing that pattern to the end of the Psalm. At our 10:30 service this week, we’ll begin our hymns in a new way. Rather than beginning with a short introduction to the hymn, we’ll hear it played through one verse and begin to sing when it starts again. Hopefully this will give all of us a sense of the melody and rhythm, and better equip us to make a joyful noise unto the Lord.

The Wired Word

Have you ever seriously thought about how scripture speaks to current events? Beginning this Sunday morning, we’ll begin using the Wired Word for our Parish Hall Christian Formation class. The conversations are sure to be lively, the opinions varied, and as always, the fellowship will be warm and inviting. Bring your bibles and join us for interesting and thought-provoking discussions each Sunday morning at 9:30 in the Parish Hall. If you’d like to prepare in advance, please email Mother Chris+ at rector@stfrancisrutherfordton.org to receive the week’s focus story and relevant scriptural references.
